The Treatments You Need to Upgrade Your Blowdry

While a professional blowdry can ensure your hair is sleek and smooth or big and bouncy, depending on your hair type and favourite style, there are some fabulous treatments that can really make a difference to the longevity of this go-to grooming fave, as well as ensure your hair is as healthy as possible.

The Frizz-buster
Perfect for this time of year, the BRAE Smoothing Botox Express employs hydrolysed soy protein to add strength to the hair and leave it smoother and without frizz. Best of all the treatment lasts up to one month.

For an INSTAnt mirror shine
Touted as a ‘raincoat for the hair’, the silicone-free K Water treatment forms a shield to protect against environmental elements that cause frizz. Its lightweight formulation has been developed to ensure the active ingredients could be targeted to damaged hair without weighing it down. After only a few seconds of contact, K Water will dramatically improve the quality of the hair, leaving it incredible healthy and weightlessly fluidified.

The tailor-made treatment
The Fusio-Dose ritual creates a customised mix of Concentrés and Boosters to devise a super concentrated, blended formula, designed to transform the look of your hair. With four concetrés available to target your primary need and five powerful boosters to enhance your hair’s health, Fusio Dose offers the ultimate bespoke conditioning treatment.

To revive the hair’s health
This detox protocol uses a choice of two Kerastase Fusio Scrubs namely, Scrub Apaisant or Scrub Energisant to deeply cleanse the scalp and remove the build-up of products and pollutants. The detox is finished with oil drops and a revitalizing massage that helps activate microcirculation to boost the scrub’s efficacy; and which will ensure the hair – and scalp – are in optimal condition for whatever treatment or hair service, if any, you choose to have after it.

The Four Trademark Styles of Winter 2021

As Pastels Salon launches its latest two collections – Urban and Ivory Urban – both of which are inspired by the legacy of lockdown and the dawning of a new post-Covid era where self-expression runs free and knows no constraint, Natalie Kasses, the salon’s Creative Director gives us a breakdown of the styles that will dominate this new fashion season.

Fringes in all their forms will be popular, but the most popular incarnation will be a strong and low-fuss choice. Added to that is the grown-out bang look that is defined by choppier layers and plenty of them. Layers in curly or coily hair creates volume and highlights individual curls and the addition of a few shorter face-framing pieces can be incredibly flattering.

Bobs are going nowhere. But the square outlined, shorter, blockier bob will be the most popular incarnation as it is very versatile – it can be ironed smooth and glossy to get it looking super sharp, or it can be left looking tousled with beach waves or by letting it dry naturally.

The mullet is a bold commitment but one with an edgy, rebellious attitude. It can be softened by balayage or a pastel tint.

Dramatic chops such as buzz cut sides pays a brave, modern and edgy homage to self-expression. It is very much Grace Jones meets GenZ in this razor-sharp look. It’s a very edgy, rebellious, as well as being a sleek cut that can show off your face.

Curtain Bangs

According to TikTok, curtain bangs is the of-the-moment fringe. This 70s-inspired trend, which takes inspiration from icons such as Brigette Bardot and Farrah Fawcett has become popular with contemporary style mavens including Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello and Dakota Johnson.

Far less of a commitment than traditional, more blunt bangs, curtain bangs frame your face and tend to be shorter in the middle with lengthier wisps on the sides. Universally flattering and with a nod to French, effortless style, they can be tailored to suit most hair types and inject a bit of retro glamour into any style!

Curtain bangs are an apt choice for almost everyone with only a tiny handful of exceptions. They flatter most face shapes, especially those with round or square faces as they keep the forehead visible to elongate the face. If, however, you have a smallish forehead or an uncontrollable cowlick, they are best avoided!

If you have fine hair, the main issue you may run into is your bangs looking thin and sparse so your stylist will need to bring enough hair forward for the cut. For those with thick hair, keeping the length of the fringe a bit longer is a good idea so that it can blend into your face framing pieces; while those with coarse hair may need their stylist to use texturizing shears to make the ends wispy and light.

The perfect “lazy girl’s bang” require a small amount of effort to style well. It’s a good idea to have a professional round brush so you can add both body and direction to the bangs. A flat iron such as the Dyson Corrale can also add texture, but it is important to remember to turn it away from your face when using so the placement of the bangs is correct. Finally, a dry shampoo can work magic on a set of sweeping bangs, making them more controllable and keeping them grease-free.

Follow-up appointments are dependent on the length of the bangs you want. For instance, you can have a trim between 6-8 weeks, or if you want to keep them longer, you can go longer and visit your stylist every 8-10 weeks.

Summer Hair Trends 2021

This is the decade you need to embrace this summer…

Summer 2021 will see the return of 70s hair – mullets, bangs, and layered shags will become the go-to styles but with some modern updates!

The latest incarnation of the mullet has been dubbed wolf hair. It works on pretty much every hair type and it gives a lot of movement and texture. If you have thick hair, this style will work because it comprises lots of layers, which can texturize thick hair. For those with fine hair, the addition of layers adds volume to the hair. The style can even be adapted to work with curly hair! In terms of length, it can be adapted to suit any length from the collar bone and beyond. To style it, a salt spray is a must-have. Available at the Pastels Salon eStore, Techni Art L’Oréal hair spray is a texturizing salt spray that gives your hair that on-trend beachy effect, without the rough touch and would be a great choice for this style. For those with curly hair, a curl crème such as L’Oréal Techni Art Siren Waves or Redken Curvaceous Ringlet can help style while keeping frizz at bay. This low-maintenance look is edgy, cool, and current and a great choice for those who live in Dubai and will be here during the summer months when it is hottest and you want an easy, unfussy, on-point style that requires minimal effort.

Forget platinum blondes, this season it’s the return of golden, honey hues and thanks to Netflix faves such as Queen’s Gambit and Bridgerton, strawberry blonde is also enjoying the spotlight, with style setters such as Gigi Hadid embracing the shade.

Seen on Kaia Gerber recently and a legacy of the lockdown, curtain bangs offer a range of styling options and can be pinned back easily, making it a perfect transitional style. The other take on the fringe this summer are mod bangs. As seen on Rihanna, these are typically heavier and thicker but styled across the forehead to sit right above the lashes.

Of course, if you really want to be on point this season, you can mix and match all of these elements to create a modern-day Farrah Fawcett, the ultimate 70s hair inspo – just add the iconic red swimsuit to nail the look completely!

Addressing Your Mane Stress

A common complaint due to the demands of modern life, stress can have a profound impact on both our mental and physical health. But did you know, that aside from side effects such as headaches, tight jaw, stress can also negatively impact the scalp and in turn the hair.

Of course, our scalp isn’t new to the whole stress thing. Stress can be responsible for inducing an array of scalp and hair related issues. In fact, the hair is one of the most sensitive barometers to physiological and psychological health. But, unknown to many, due to the nature of our hair growth cycle, the damaging effects of stress will not be immediately noticeable. Rather, it can take up to 12 weeks after the stressful period, which means we may not always connect stress with the issues we experience on our hair and scalp. There are, however, common tell-tale signs when the hair and scalp is under a lot of stress. Stress commonly triggers (or worsens!) flaking and itching of the scalp, which can lead to dandruff. This is because stress can affect hormone levels and may subsequently disrupt the micro-flora of the scalp. Stress can also cause your roots get limp and greasy faster than usual because stress can, through a convoluted route, raise androgen (male hormone) levels – which in turn increases your scalp’s natural oil production. This hormone imbalance can also negatively impact hair follicles, causing them to produce hairs of a thinner diameter and shorter length, resulting in an overall reduction in volume and in some cases hair loss.

But the good news is there are some measures you can take to counteract the impact on your scalp. A healthy diet can ensure there are adequate nutrients in the body. If hair loss is something you’re worrying about, up your intake of fruits and vegetables – especially dark leafy greens such as spinach and kale.  Secondly, meditating will reduce your anxiety and relax your brain, as well as reduce inflammation in the body. Finally, speak to your stylist as they will be able to recommend a range of at-home haircare products that enhance follicular activity. A popular choice is Kerastase Specifique Aminexil, which is an intensive scalp intense treatment that inhibits hair loss and acts to improve the quality of new hair, while protecting against oxidative stress. Enhanced by innovative ingredients including Gluco-Lipids and Aminexil 1500 PPM, this treatment restores the quality and suppleness of the scalp resulting in stronger and thicker hair with greater volume and shine.

5 Hair Faux Pas You Are Committing

Whether you have a fine or coarse hair type, when hair is wet, it is more fragile, especially if you have color-treated or chemically-treated hair, which means it is more liable to breakage. Pastels’ expert team outlines the 5 things you must never do with wet hairs(hair faux pas).

  1. Don’t brush your hair when it’s wet. If you find yourself with a lot of tangles, use a detangling brush that is suited to wet hair, and never use a round brush on wet hair.
  2. Avoid exposing wet hair to high heat. Gentle drying on low heat may take more time, but it will definitely reduce damage.
  3. Don’t tie wet hair into a bun or ponytail: Your hair elasticity is at its max when it’s wet, so when put in a bun or ponytail, it stretches even more causing tension breakage. In addition, your scalp won’t get enough air to dry, which can skin irritations.
  4. Avoid wrapping wet hair in a towel: The harsh fibers of the towel can be rough on your wet fragile wet hair, leading to breakage. Trying using a cotton t-shirt instead of a towel to absorb moisture.
  5. Never use a straightener on wet hairs: You may be in a rush but by styling your hair before it’s completely dry, but you’re actually frying your hair for a damaged, dull look.

If you have damaged your hair, then perhaps consider a hair mask. Applying a mask to wet hair is much less effective, though so avoid applying the treatment when your hair is completely wet. Instead, towel dries your hair before applying so the mask can penetrate your hair shaft easier and the mask’s benefits can be maximized.

Here’s What To Do To Avoid Sun Damage?

Spending days by the pool or at the beach is a perfect way to relax this time of year but remember that while you may want to achieve a golden glow, tanned skin can lead to premature aging and skin imperfections such as hyperpigmentation, not to mention a lifetime of sun damage as the damage is accumulative. So, before you go out to soak up the rays, make sure to include sunscreen cream or Sunscreen lotion on your list of outdoor essentials, even before your phone and sunglasses.

Why should you use sunscreen cream?

SPF application should be a vital part of your daily skincare routine. Use a high-factor, broad-spectrum SPF daily to protect your skin from damage. Many people think of SPFs as thick white creams that sit on the surface of the skin and give you a pasty white appearance but there are now a number of products from budget to luxury that absorb beautifully into the skin, providing both moisture and protection, some even incorporate a tint to rival many tinted moisturizers. A word of warning, though, watch out for makeup brands with SPF. Many foundations and tinted moisturizers offer some protection, but these should not be used as a substitute for a dedicated SPF sunscreen  product.

Not surprisingly the best type of sunscreen is the kind you wear on a daily and consistent basis. Aside from that, you should choose your sunscreen based on your skin type and outdoor activity. There are two common types of sunscreens: physical and chemical. Physical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin and scatter the sun’s UV rays. Chemical sunscreens sit on top of the skin to filter out UVA and UVB rays. Chemical sunscreens with common ingredients such as oxybenzone or octinoxate [that act as UV filters] are usually thinner in consistency and spread easily on the skin and leave no white or grey residue after application. For a chemical sunscreen, make sure to apply it 20 minutes before going outside.

Unfortunately, according to the experts, most of us are not applying nearly enough to protect ourselves. People typically apply between 25-50 percent of the recommended amount of sunscreen. Remember, a ‘full body’ application requires about eight teaspoons of sunscreen.

If you looking for sun care products then do visit the pastels shop we have a variety of sunscreen cream for face as well as for body.

Another key factor in sun damage is the time of day you are exposed. It’s important to stay out of the sun as much as possible between the peak times of 11 am and 3 pm when the sun is at its strongest and if you do venture out ensure your cover-up.

Finally, if bronzed skin is a must-have, experts recommend faking it with a spray tan, which will give you a golden glow all year round, even when the sun is not shining!

Skin Care Routine – Secrets You Need to Know

It’s easy to understand where cleansers, toners, moisturisers and eye creams fit within a skin care routine but for skincare novices, it can all start to unravel when facial oils, serums and items such as Vitamin C, antioxidants, SPF and retinol are forced into the equation, especially if you are e a skin-care novice.

While each of these is applied after the basic steps of your skin-care routine, they are completely different products and not interchangeable as each one offers different benefits to the skin.

Here are the few Skin Care Routine Secrets You Need to Know to Stay Beautiful & Young:

Serums for skin care regime:

Serums are targeted to address specific concerns with the appearance of your skin. In general, a serum has water as its base so it absorbs quickly and is used for actives such as vitamin C, hyaluronic acid or glycolic acid in high concentrations – ingredients that address concerns such as skin brightness, discolouration or first signs of ageing.

The higher concentration of active ingredients ensures greater penetration into the top layers of the skin, which in turn leads to visible benefits.

Oils for skin care routine:

In the case of oils, they are less about the deliverance of ingredients and more about moisturizing and calming and so they are great for locking in that hydration.

If you want to incorporate both serums and oils in your skincare regimen apply your serums during the first few steps of your routine — as in after cleansing and toning — and your facial oil at the end to lock in moisture. As a rule, oils can penetrate moisturizers, but not vice versa so always put facial oils on last.

Vitamin C:

Aside from serums and oils, it is a good idea to add an antioxidant such as vitamin C (if your serum does not already take care of this) into your AM routine. Vitamin C is one ingredient every skin type needs as it brightens, protects against sun damage, and promotes collagen production.

Of course, every morning routine should end with SPF as this will ensure your skin is protected from the sun’s ageing and dangerous rays.

At night, after moisturising, you can end your routine with retinol. Retinol is not for daytime use (it breaks down in the sun) and shouldn’t be paired with some ingredients, including vitamin C and salicylic acid. With retinol, just cleanse, add a basic moisturizer on top, and skip exfoliating for the next two mornings.

As an added bonus, allow each step of your routine to absorb for one full minute as this will increase penetration and make the whole routine more efficient, keeping your skin radiant and youthful!

How To Embrace Grey In Glorious Fashion

While there are many things from 2020 we are glad to move on from, it would seem that grey hair has become a legacy trend that is most definitely here to stay, if google searches are anything to go by. Of course, if your hair is naturally turning grey and you plan to ditch the dye, there are a few things you should know before taking the plunge and letting your silver siren loose.

Stop plucking

We’ve all had the urge to tweeze grey hairs when they sprout up, but resist. Plucking out grey hairs can damage the follicle, and then sometimes your hair just won’t grow back and since hair naturally thins as you get older, you don’t want to encourage it.

Blend the texture

Since grey hair lacks pigment, it tends to have a different texture than the rest of your mane. On finer hair, greys could be coarse, and on coarser hair, they can be fine, or sometimes it can be a combination of the two, so to ensure your grey hair blends with the rest of your hair, the right styling tools and products are essential.

Consider the chop

A sophisticated short haircut pretty much eliminates the growing-out stage. Due to the varying textures of grey hair, going for a shorter hairstyle can help control hair that becomes harder to manage at longer lengths. A shorter style also works well with soft, finer greys, as less length gives structure and body to limp strands, rather than weighing it down. Another option to diffuse grey roots is to embrace long layers that are slightly dishevelled.

It doesn’t need to be all or nothing

You can use highlighting and lowlighting techniques to blend greys with semi-permanent colour to soften the regrowth line. While it can take several months, but it will help blend your grey roots during the transition while still enhancing your style.

Use correct homecare

Grey hair tends to be on the drier side, so using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner is key for hydration. But all hydrating products are not the same. Avoid dimethicone, a type of silicone that’s commonly used in all types of hair products.  Consider switching to a silver shampoo, which can neutralise any yellow tones in grey hair.

Try a gloss

With grey shades in particular, there can be a risk of ‘washing out’ your complexion. Remember, grey hair is considered to have no pigment in it, but white hair does still contain a little bit of natural underlying pigment. Those pigments look either yellow or orange, depending on your shade of grey. To even out your overall colour, get a gloss treatment in salon which will tone down any unwanted brassiness and ensure your end result hair colour flatters your skin tone.

Say Hello To 2021’s Prevalent Beauty Trends

The eyes have it

Boost your mood with strategically placed swabs of technicolour. There were shimmery green, hot pinks and yellows seen on the virtual fashion week catwalks – and given that the eyes are the only visible site of self-expression when you mask-clad, then why not make them pop! Bonus points for channelling the glamour of the 80s with metallic accents.

Crimson crush

In times of war or hardship, sales of beauty products tend to soar, and in particular lipstick. A bold lip is a fashion statement in itself – and a perfect way to be groomed for those zoom calls. This season, why not channel your inner Hollywood screen siren with a classic red lip.

Natural skin

Coined by Pinterest, “skinimalism” embraces your natural skin and utilises super-minimal makeup – think mascara and lip balm only.  It makes sense, given that forgoing the foundation dramatically reduces your chance of maskne.

Retro Nails

Fashion certainly is embracing the halcyon days of the 70s and 80s so why not extend your fashion kudos to your fingertips by embracing retro nails?

Seventies-inspired swirls and shapes feel calming and comforting, yet totally fresh and modern thanks to fashion’s focus on the disco decade. Plus an earthy colour palette pays homage to the vintage vibe better than sharp-focussed colours such as red and pink.

This Is How To Banish Frizz

After a long year and busy festive season, our hair’s health can suffer, leaving it prone to frizz. While achieving that glass-hair look might seem like mission impossible, by curating your haircare must-haves and opting for an in-salon service, sleek, smooth hair is within anyone’s reach.

Hair Botox has been re-born thanks to BRAE and its latest offering, BRAE Smoothing Botox. This treatment innovation combines a bespoke cocktail of active ingredients and advanced nanotechnology to guarantee results, without compromising the health of the hair. Unlike rival treatments, BRAE Smoothing Botox is a one-step system of keratin straightening and takes less than one hour for the product to activate on the hair to deliver smooth, soft, silky hair with an impeccable shine for up to three months!

Another more affordable, but time-consuming, option is the KeraStraight Ultimate treatment. The brand’s advanced protein technology is a game changer in the hair care industry, ensuring the treatment repairs and rebuilds the hair, leaving it healthy, straighter and stronger.

For a quick fix-it, there is an array of frizz-taming products available but our favourites are Kerastase Elixir Ultime and Redken’s Frizz Dismiss, both available to purchase on the Pastels’ e-shop.

Kerastase Elixir Ultime is a leave-in hair oil that provides deep nutrition to dull hair with heat protection for up to 230°. It seals split ends and smooths the hair fiber for long-lasting frizz control. Hair is instantly vivified through 48 hours of visibly intense shine. The formula helps prevent excess volume, puffiness and frizz while increasing manageability. This oil-in-serum also features sustainably sourced Babassu Oil for enhanced smoothness and shine.

The 5 Trends that prove 2020 impacted our hair!

2020 is a year best forgotten but its legacy has left an indelible mark across all areas of life – from our love of comfort dressing to the embrace of makeup-free (or the appearance of) skin, it’s hardly surprising the hair industry has also been impacted. Here are 5 looks that are set to dominate 2021, all of which can be attributed to the happenings of 2020.

The Mullet-inspired Shag: Pioneered by Miley Cyrus, the mullet is the modern iteration of the shaggy style that has been growing in popularity. This anomaly of a cut is characterized by layers, rather than length. Not for the faint of heart, but if done right, it can look amazing on virtually any hair texture and with or without bangs and the cropped layers give your hair instant texture and cool-factor.

60s- style bangs: Straight across bangs or eyelash-grazing fringe a la 60’s icons Brigette Bardot and Jane Birkin, this soft style offers a perfectly graceful grow-out phase, and when paired with soft layers around the face, it will draw attention directly to the eyes – ideal when you are wearing a mask!

Undone Bob: This year, low maintenance is high on the agenda, ensuring bobs will be everywhere, with the look interpreted to channel your personal style. Stick straight and glossy, beach babe waves or a French-girl grunge vibe, anything goes.

Experimental Colour: While balayage has become to go-to, for those wanting to push the boundaries of colour, now is your chance! Unexpected, bold shades such as pink or neon green (think Billie Eilish) look incredibly striking peeking out between naturally coloured strands. A word of wisdom for colour virgins, pink highlights are one of the easiest shades to channel this trend as the colour compliments many skin tones and will look flattering as it fades.

Hair Health: Perhaps it was because 2020 was the first time stress-induced hair loss became prevalent for some people or perhaps it was because salon visits were skipped due to lockdown, but whichever reason, 2021 clutch of best-selling products will be focused on hair health and unsurprisingly Olaplex tops this list. It is, however, important to remember that your should focus not just on your hair but your scalp too. Giving your scalp a little TLC can help prevent dryness, flaking, and can even promote shinier hair.

The Definitive Guide To Achieving A Bouncy Blowdry At Home

With parties, social gatherings and nights out, this time of year can be hectic and leave you little time to think. If you have a last-minute invite and haven’t time to hit the salon for a blowdry, then here’s the next best thing: a step-by-step guide to how to achieve an almost salon-like blowdry at home. The most crucial thing is to ensure you have the right tools and  products at your disposal to master the look you want, including a blow-dryer, a paddle brush, a round brush, a comb, some grips/clips, heat protection cream, a mousse and a finishing serum such as Olaplex no. 7. Thankfully, all of these products are available at the dedicated Pastels e-store or should you need them instantly, they can be delivered in under an hour via the Pastels e-store on bgX.

Once you have your products, then in just four steps you can create a style to rival any diva!

Step One: Wash and blast hair dry:

After applying shampoo and conditioner to the hair, roughly towel dry it and apply a small amount of mousse to the hair, evenly distributing it using a wide-toothed comb to. Blast dry the hair to 80% dry and do this upside down to get some root lift using the paddle brush to smooth the hair.

Step Two: Sectioning:

Start at the back and section the hair into three larger sections, do the same at each side (leave the front section out) so in the end you should have three larger sections on each side and one at the front with a total of 10 sections. Split each of these into two further smaller sections. Taking each section in turn, wrap the hair around the round brush from the ends towards the scalp and hold the heat until dry, then use the cool shot button on your hair dryer to set it.

Step Three: Pincurls:

Once the curl has been released, roll the curl back up on itself and use a Kirby grip to hold it into a pincurls. Leave the hair to set for 5-10 minutes in the set position.

Step Four: Apply Serum:

Once you have taken the Kirby grips out, place a pea sized drop of the Olaplex serum into your hands and turn the head upside down. Run the serum through the hair and then stand up, shake the hair back and voila – your bouncy blowdry is complete!

The Dos and Don’ts of Fake Tanning

We all know that sunbathing is an absolute no these days and besides with the cooler climate, December is not really a time for sunbathing BUT here’s the dilemma- golden skin is a great way to boost your confidence and make you look and feel glamorous. Thankfully, there is a wider selection of tanning products and tools than ever before to ensure you can become the bronzed goddess of your dreams. So, which of today’s types of tans is perfect for you? From mousses to lotions to spray tans, it can be an overwhelming process. Thankfully, tanning expert Elvie who is based at our Jumeirah branch has some advice.

Preparation really is so important when it comes to tanning and an area of beauty care that really gets overlooked. Without it, you can end up with streaks and uneven colour fade. Put in the effort before your tan and you’ll reap the rewards during your self-tan’s lifecycle.

FAKE TAN TIP 1: EXFOLIATE BEFORE FAKE TAN

This will remove dead skin cells and create a smooth and uniform surface on the skin for the tan to be applied to, which will in turn result in an even golden colour, but stay clear of exfoliators that contain oils, as these will only act as a film on the skin and while wonderful for locking in moisture, aren’t ideal for tanning.

FAKE TAN TIP 2: DO HAIR REMOVAL 24 HOURS BEFORE TANNING

This is done to ensure the skin has calmed and any cuts have healed

FAKE TAN TIP 3: AVOID MOISTURISER WHEN YOU’RE SELF TANNING

On the day of your tan application, whether at-home or in a salon, don’t moisturise your body or wear deodorant or perfume and don’t use a facial oil on the morning of tanning.

FAKE TAN TIP 4: WHEN TO SHOWER BEFORE FAKE TAN

If you’re tanning at home and shower just before your tan application, blast your skin with cold water before you get out. It will also shrink all of your pores and therefore reduce the chance of them getting blocked.

FAKE TAN TIP 5: MOISTURISE WITH ALOE VERA

Moisturise your hands, elbows, knees and feet as well as your nails with an aloe vera based moisturiser as this will stop them from absorbing tan and changing colour.

FAKE TAN TIP 6: INVEST IN A SPECIALIST BRAND

Choose a brand that specialises in tanning, then you’re sure to get better results than from a brand that has one or two products in its skincare line that contain self-tan.

FAKE TAN TIP 7: CHOOSE YOUR TAN TYPE CAREFULLY

It’s also about personal preference vs format of tan rather than shade sometimes. A lotion or tanning oil is the most hydrating to the skin, a mousse is the quickest to dry and in my opinion the easiest to apply, and a spray is the closest thing you’ll get to a spray tan.

FAKE TAN TIP 8: USE A MITT

Always apply using an applicator mitt: pump your product onto the mitt and apply to the skin using sweeping motions, rather than circular motions to evenly distribute the product. Start at the ankles and work your way up.

FAKE TAN TIP 9: APPROACH YOUR FACE DIFFERENTLY TO YOUR BODY

When it comes to your face, mix the self-tan with a small amount of moisturiser to just soften the formula and minimise the chance of breakouts.

FAKE TAN TIP 10: CONTOUR IF YOU CAN

Add additional tan to the area you want shaded – so underneath the collarbones, underneath the bicep indent, the outer torso and in between the thighs. For an extra special glow, try highlighting your tan with an illuminator on areas such as shoulders,  cheekbones and shin bones to create a sheen and definition

Hairbrush Heaven: How to find your perfect brush

According to the experts, most of us are actually using the wrong hair tools for our hair type which can lead to frizz, split ends, and breakage. To prevent damage, it is vital that you choose a brush or comb that suits your hair type as well as your preferred styling regime.  Along with detangling, tools such as brushes and combs can energize the scalp and help evenly distribute oils to keep hair healthy. But with the hair market so heavily saturated right now, picking the perfect brush for your hair goals can be difficult so let us talk you through it!

Combs

A seamless wide-tooth comb is a good option for those with coarse, curly or wavy hair because it detangles without breaking up the natural curl pattern. Also, it glides through the hair without much friction and there are no sharp plastic seams on the teeth, which can result in pulling and snapping.

Combs with a spike on one end and very little space between each tooth are great for using with a flat-iron to achieve super-sleek hair, or for sectioning hair before a blowout.

Detangling Brushes

Detangling brushes are most often specifically designed to be gentle enough to use on wet hair, though they can be used on dry hair as well if your hair isn’t too thick. If your hair is prone to tangles why not bring a detangling brush into the shower with you to eliminate any knots and work conditioner through your hair evenly to hydrate and smoothen it.

 Paddle Brushes

Perfect for those with long, thick hair, most paddle brushes are designed to detangle and smooth, as well as for blowdrying wavy hair straight.

These are also a great tool for those with damaged hair as the wide space between the teeth ensure snagging and pulling is kept to a minimum.

Round Brushes

Round brushes are perfect for creating that voluminous, classic wavy blowout but the different size of round brush, with different types of bristles, will determine the finished look. Generally, the smaller the barrel of a round brush, the more curly or wavy your hair will be after blow-drying.  Larger barrel round brushes are better for created a sleek blowout, and a medium barrel is most commonly used for that classic wavy blowout.

These Are The (Hair) Treatments That Can Transform

With four concentrés available to target your primary need and five powerful boosters to enhance your hair’s health, Fusio Dose offers the ultimate bespoke conditioning treatment.

Its lamellar technology, borrowed from skincare, delivers repairing amino acids and proteins only to areas that need it. After only a few seconds of contact, K Water will dramatically improve the quality of the hair, leaving it incredible healthy and weightlessly fluidified. Hair is protected from breakage and is easier to comb, blowdry and style. It is perfect for hair lovers who are short on time!

How To Choose The Right Retinol For You

Retinol has achieved a reputation as the ultimate powerhouse to keep skin looking youthful but with so many different versions on the market, how it can be difficult to know which one to choose.  In general, when introducing a retinol-based product into your skincare regime, it should be done slowly and in a gentle way i.e. choosing a product with a low percentage and build up the frequency of use as this will minimise skin irritation.

Retinol esters (such as retinyl palmitate) are the weakest member of the retinol family. This form is found mostly in over-the-counter brands and products with them take much longer to achieve the similar results as the stronger forms of retinol.

Retinoids (including Retinol and Retinoic Acid AKA Retin-A or Tretinoin) are a large family of retinols which are categorised as second-generation retinols. In higher concentrations, these are typically found in medical grade skincare. Retinoic Acid is the strongest retinoid, and is actually naturally occurring in the body, making it bio available, unlike other retinoids which need to be converted by our skin cells once they hit our skin.

Of course for those who want to achieve results comparable to those yielded by retinol with zero negative impact on the skin, Eminence Organic has developed a natural complex offering instant and lasting results containing chicory root and tara tree, which is found in many of its products including its cult Bamboo Firming Fluid. The natural solution uses oligosaccharides from chicory root that have a beneficial effect on epidermal and dermal metabolism, just like retinol. With the inclusion of tara tree, the complex provides an immediate, superficial tightening effect alongside the long-term benefits of cell regeneration for incredible age correction. Clinical results show an immediate, superficial tightening effect visible in as little as 5 minutes – and after just 6 days collagen levels increased by 25% compared to 17% from conventional retinol. Who said you need to compromise the skin’s health for the sake of youthful beauty?!

The essentials every beach (or pool!) bag should have!

While many may be celebrating the return of winter coats and boots, in the UAE this is the perfect time to hit the beach or pool. But in addition to parading your favourite swimwear, there are some items that no beach bag should be without.

SunKiss is a luxury beach lifestyle brand that not only protects the skin from the harsh rays of the sun but also protects the planet. Using natural ingredients, the range is a luxury collection of products that are easy to apply, offers advanced sun protection and feels gorgeous on the skin.  Proudly made in the UAE, this sustainable mineral suncare brand is a non-Nano Sunscreen; and offers an immediate sun filter, unlike conventional chemical sun creams which require application 20 minutes before sun exposure, so you can enjoy the sun without compromising your skin’s health!

Sun, sand and seawater are a harmful combination to the hair, and can often leave it looking dry, damaged and out of control. KeraStraight’s Sun Protect spray is the perfect antidote to the harmful effects caused by a beach environment. In addition to protecting the hair from harmful UVA/UVB rays, saltwater and chlorine up to 8 times more than our natural defences, the lightweight spray can be applied to wet hair or dry hair depending on the level of protection required.

An absolute essential hair accessory, the invisibobble allows you to create any number of hairstyles with precision and ease. The inventive style of the invisibobble provides an even distribution of pressure, which in turn prevents the headaches and hair kinks often associated with traditional hair ties. Made from artificial resin, the invisibobble features anti-allergenic properties that also make it sweat proof and waterproof.

A perfect complement to the invisibobble is the Tangle Teezer, the world’s favourite detangling hairbrush. With its unique and compact design, the Tangle Teezer can be carried with you wherever you go, and with its memory flex technology, it ensures swift and gentle results, so you can go from beach to bar in a jiffy!

Vitamin C – The Holy Grail Of Skincare Ingredients

Whatever your skincare issue – uneven skin tone, rough texture, fine lines, acne scars, general dullness the chances are that vitamin C-based products can help, leaving your skin brighter, clearer and smoother!

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals that helps your skin’s natural regeneration process, which in turn helps your body repair damaged skin cells. A topical antioxidant such as vitamin C can offset daily aggressors such as UV damage and nasties common to air pollution, but this free-radical fighting power is not just used to keep signs of premature aging at bay. In neutralizing these free radicals, vitamin C may also help protect skin from precancerous changes caused by UV exposure too.

Quite remarkably, in addition to its antioxidant status, vitamin C boasts numerous other skin-saving benefits. As it is highly acidic, when vitamin C is used topically the skin is triggered to heal itself by accelerating the production of collagen and elastin, the protein fibres that help keep skin plump and firm. Vitamin C is a commonly used skin brightener as it contains a property that inhibits your skin’s melanin production, which is what causes skin discoloration.

Usually, the vitamin is found listed as ascorbic acid because this is the most stable and effective form of vitamin C in skin care. Another thing worth noting is that when vitamin C and vitamin E are combined, they form a true powerhouse that offers double protection against free-radical damage. This is the case is in Eminence Organics’ Citrus and Kale Potent C Plus E Serum. Applying a few drops of this potent serum before your moisturiser will really transform your skincare regimen and take it to the next level.

Those with sensitive skin may have allergies or redness from vitamin C so it is recommended using a product with a low vitamin C concentration and increasing it as your skin gets used to the product.

How To Self-Tan Like A Pro

If you’re a fan of sunless tanning, you might feel that nailing that gorgeous, natural-looking glow without being left with patches and a whole heap of mess is something that is beyond the reach of an at-home self-tan.

But, achieving just-back-from-the-beach glow and a streak-free finish every time can be a cinch if you know what you are doing. Pastels’ resident spray tan expert Elvie shares some of her at-home tanning secrets for mastering a perfect pro-like application from the comfort of your own home.

  • Prepare your skin thoroughly before applying a new tan.
  • Be sure to exfoliate. Using an oil-free scrub all over your body or exfoliating gloves are also an option.
  • Apply an oil-free moisturiser to any dry areas (which includes the usual areas of hands, elbows, knees and feet), but also add a dose of moisturiser to any areas of dry flaking skin, wrists and underneath the arm and up around the ankles to help dilute the tan and create a 3D effect.
  • Use a clean, fresh Tanning Mitt to apply your tan.
  • Start at the top of the body on the arms meeting in the middle at the chest area and work down the torso to the legs (leaving out the hands, feet and face for now).
  • Work in long sweeping motions and go over the same area with the mitt to buff the tan even further before moving onto the next area.
  • To tan your back, work across the bottom then up and over the shoulders. To finish the centre, turn the mitt around and use the back of your hand to wave the tan side to side, meeting your tan already applied on the sides of your body.
  • Once you have covered the entire body, turn your attention to your hands and feet.
  • Using leftover tan on the mitt, balance your hand in a claw shape and sweep the mitt over your hand from the wrist down over the fingers, blending the tan two to three times by gliding backwards and forwards.
  • Down to the ankles sweep down over a stretched foot, back along the sides, up around the ankle and back down the foot and over the toes (again using leftover tan on the mitt creating that 3D effect).
  • After you have cleansed your face, apply your self-tan before your usual moisturiser of SPF.
  • Buff the skin using an oil-free exfoliator after three days to keep a smooth even surface and moisturise dai;y.

6 Hair Trends You Will See Everywhere This AW!

2020 has been a unique – to say the least – year but as September rolls on and the Autumn trends are reigning supreme in stores, perhaps it’s time to embrace the season’s newest hair trends to update your style.

Colour Trends:

  1.  Shadow root: Lived-in, more natural looking hair is definitely one of the most popular trends this year as a whole  and this low-maintenance hair look is a perfect option for blondes. The secret to achieving this look is that it’s blended well.
  2. Warm highlights: Highlights are a brilliant way to add depth and dimension to your look. This year, warm shades  such as champagne, caramel and honey tones, will be popular.
  3. Reflective red: Muted red tones are super trendy and highlights and colour slashes can be used to give the hair a subtle but effective pop of red that provides the hair with a multi-dimensional, interesting look.

The go-to cuts:

  1. THE MODERN SHAG: Inspired by ’70s iconic styles such as Farrah Fawcett’s feathered hair and Joan Jett’s rock’n’roll style, the strength in the shape comes from keeping the ends blunt and exterior strong.
  2. THE SOLID BANGED BOB: As seen on model Aylah Peterson at Saint Laurent, this style has statement and presence and is defined by keeping the strands all one length, which gives it a glass hair finish. Think Uma Thurman in Pulp Ficton and you’re on the right track!
  3. BIG BLOW DRY GLAMOUR: As proven by Lanvin’sAW 2020/2021 fashion show, but the 2020 version is cooler and edgier. To recreate the look, apply a volumising spray to dry hair and blow dry with a round bristle brush. Take a large tong and separate the hair in large sections, then set around the tong as if you were putting rollers in, making sure that you leave the ends out.

The Magic of a Well-Chosen Moisturiser

Smooth, flawless skin

Pastels Salon Jumeirah’s resident beautician, Edwige shares some insight into the importance of a good moisturiser….

If you think the moisturizer you use does not affect how your makeup looks and how long it will last, then you need to think again. A good base layer is crucial for flawless makeup. In addition to helping your foundation, CC cream, or concealer to go on smoothly, the formula you choose can tone down redness, help balance your complexion, and make your skin glow. In fact, face moisturizer is the linchpin of your skincare routine. A moisturizer can improve radiance by enhancing light reflection off your skin, diminish fine lines by plumping, increase hydration by pulling in water, and protect from the environment by forming a breathable seal over the skin.

Choosing a targeted formula for your skin’s needs also means it is easier to achieve any makeup look. Always prep skin with a moisturizer that is right for your skin type because if you do not, you’ll just put more makeup on top, when you could solve the problem by having a good skincare routine.

Moisturizer for Dry Skin

If you have dry skin, then using a rich cream can help you achieve that dewy skin you need. You can layer all the tinted moisturizer or creamy highlighter you want, but if your skin is dry, flakes and fine lines are going to steal the show. So, it is vital to prep your skin with a stellar face cream that contains hydrating ingredients.  It is also vital to take the time to fully massage in a moisturiser. Without prepping the skin properly, the makeup will not sit uniformly across the face. The areas that are dry and flaky will just get encrusted into the makeup and you will see all of that sitting on the surface.

Moisturizer for Oily Skin

For those with oily skin, a lighter texture is better. Moisturisers that contain high levels of humectant ingredients such as hyaluronic acid bind to—and pull in—water to hydrate skin and if your skin is hydrated, it will not create excess oil to compensate for its lack of water. The result: Your skin is naturally less greasy in oily zones.

Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin

If you are sensitive, then try a fragrance-free formula to achieve an even complexion. While a fragrance adds to the sensorial experience of using a product, these compounds can trigger irritation for those who have sensitive skin. That does not mean you should avoid all skincare products, rather choose a hydrating moisturizer with no added fragrances to keep your skin calm. The outer skin layer serves as a barrier between your skin and the outside world and when it is disrupted, which is often the case with sensitized skin, it loses hydration, leading to dryness, inflammation, and redness, so you must choose your moisturiser wisely to avoid this happening.

Fringe Benefits: How to Choose the Right Bangs for you

During lockdown, even celebrities opt for the chop and experimented with bangs and it looks like this definitive French Girl- inspired hair trend is going nowhere soon. But, the best hairstyles with bangs can dramatically play up your features, as well as lend symmetry and balance to your face if you ensure that they are chosen with your face shape in mind.

The Best Bangs for Round Face Shapes: Side Bangs

Perennially popular, side bangs are especially flattering on round faces, which are soft around the edges and often wider in the cheeks. This is because the angle of the bangs creates more length in your face and thus a more oval shape.

The Best Bangs for Square or Oblong Face Shapes: A-Shaped Bangs

Bangs are all about illusion. This is key for square or oblong face shapes, which tend to be wider at the cheeks and more angular, especially around the jawline. This means that a soft A-shape works best for women with square faces, as the tapered ends create angles, which help to soften your jawline and bring attention to your eyes. Another option is a long, layered fringe which will help to soften and balance your features.

The Best Bangs for Heart Face Shapes: Crescent Bangs

Perfect for heart-shaped faces, which are wide at the top and draw to a point at the chin, this soft, crescent-shaped fringe (a.k.a. longer at the outer edges and slightly shorter in the middle is a ‘70s-inspired look thanks to the long and feathery wisps.

The Best Bangs for Long Face Shapes: Grown-Out Bangs

If you have a long face, cropped bangs should be avoided as they will draw attention to your forehead so keep the fringe line low right around your eyebrows.

How to Create Summer’s Hottest Hairstyles…

So, for everything you need to know in terms of how to master these current trends and what products you need, read on!

Nailing the Latest Manicure Trends

Even if you are planning to spend the next few months dressed simply in jeans and a tee, nails can be a terrific low-key way to pay homage to the latest trends.

As Winter moves into Spring, gone are the gothic and rich red shades of the past few months and a lighter palette of colours and softer, more feminine accents are poised to take centre stage.

1. French fancy

The traditional French manicure has had an update for 2020. The expected white tips have been replaced. At Zimmerman, this was with a rainbow of colours, whilst at other shows red-toned tips were all the rage.

2. Too Cute

As well as highlighting the tips of your nails, Fashion Week saw the emergence of a new focal point – the cuticle. At Oscar de la Renta, as well as colour-burst tips, there was colour at the cuticle line too. Since the runway shows, this trend has been all over Instagram.  Another version is to have gold accents around the edge of your nails, offering a subtle yet glamorous way to add glimmer.

3. All about accessories

Some of the most eye-catching nails seen backstage at the shows included subtle embellishments, like the pearl-encrusted nails at Simone Rocha and the marbled nails at Roland Mouret.

4. Groundbreaking Spring florals

Florals for Spring might not be news when it comes to fashion but scroll through any insta feed and you will soon become inspired to wear delicate florals on your nails

5. Nail geometry

For an uber-modern update to nail art, create geometric shapes on your nails by painting only one half a bright, bold colour. Traditional red reigns supreme and looks great against a nude backdrop.

Here’s how you can improve your skin’s texture

If you suffer from dull, tired skin or problematic acne and you dream of skin with a perfect texture and beautiful youth-enhancing glow, why not put some time and energy into rethinking your approach to skincare? While the thought of overhauling a skincare regime can be daunting, the good news is that this process be broken down into a simple 7-step programme that will ensure your skin looks healthy and glowing with no filter needed!

Step 1: Do a one-week reset of your skincare routine refresh

To ensure your products are suited to your skin and are not causing any adverse side effects that you may have – blotchiness, redness, excess oil, acne breakouts – this refresh is a must. For one week, pare back to the basics: Use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer that don’t contain fragrance or active ingredients.

Step 2: Choose Your Basics

After your reset week, it’s safe to assume any issues you still have are not caused by a product so now it is the perfect time to assess your skin. If you like what you see, keep using the same cleanser and moisturizer you did in the reset week, but if you think your skin is lacking and/or experiencing some issues then make an appointment for a skincare consultation and facial so an expert can recommend the best basic products for your skin type.

Step 3: Wear Sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen regularly decreases the rate of aging and hyperpigmentation so it is a must-have in the quest for perfect skin.

Step 4: Add in an Antioxidant Serum

Serum is like an insurance policy when worn under sunscreen. Make sure you choose one that contains vitamins C and E – Eminence Organics Citrus and Kale Serum (especially when partnered with the brand’s firming Rosehip Oil) is just brilliant. Remember though any new product you introduce could trigger a new skin issue, in which case you will need to go back to the reset week and start over.

Step 5: Treat Acne (If You Have It)

For people with acne, all other skincare matters are secondary. In most instances, acne sufferers will need to add specific acne-fighting products to their skincare armoury. Never buy over-the-counter products, it is better to see a skincare specialist for a consultation during which they can identify the causes and devise a treatment plan to minimise or even eradicate the acne.

Step 6: Identify your primary skin concerns

To have your best possible skin, you need to identify the exact issues that are bothering and then try to fix them. If you need help making your list, find a picture of yourself when you were happier with your complexion and ask yourself what is different between then and now. Once you have your list, you can work on finding solutions to your problems.

Step 7: Ask the expert

To advocate a real change, you may need professional help. A skincare expert can assess your skin and recommend a course of treatments and products that will generate beautiful, healthy, glowing skin – which can be a huge boost to anyone’s self-confidence!

Hair Raising Rules of 2020’s Red Carpet

With awards season almost at an end, our favourite Hollywood A-listers have not left us disappointed with their outfit choices, eye-watering jewellery and bold make-up. But with so much sartorial diversity on this year’s Red Carpets, there has been a seismic shift when it comes to the choice of hairstyles. Gone are the stiff upstyles and boho beachy braids of the past decade, with 2020 welcoming styles that lend a distinctive nod to current hair trends.

  1. Roots rule: ..just ask Margot Robbie. At this year’s SAG awards, the Supporting Actress nominee let her brown hair peek through her fringey topknot, and even accented the color with a light brown lip.
Red Carpet Hairstyles
  1. Compliments to the dress: At the BAFTAs, newcomer Florence Pugh balanced out her voluminous gown, with a chic pulled-back style.
Red Carpet Hair Updo
  1. Slick back and sides: Saoirse Ronan opted to wear her hair down with a side parting at this year’s Golden Globes – a look also channelled by Reese Witherspoon at SAG awards, who was even more on-point with the style being given a slightly wet look.
Red Carpet Short Hairstyles
  1. Braided beauty: Trust Jennifer Lopez to champion one of the past decade’s most enduring trends – the braid. Her 2020 Golden Globes look was an intricate braided bun
Hair Style for Red Carpet
  1. Hello Old Hollywood: Salma Hayek, Hollywood veteran Jane Seymour and Priyanka Chopra all paid homage to Old Hollywood, opting for voluminous blow-outs and textured waves.

The Hair Trends that are Kickstarting a New Decade

When you think of the past decade, balayage and beachy hair spring instantly to mind but as we start 2020, there has been a seismic shift in hair trends.

After several years of platinum shades reigning supreme, there is a definite return to darker shades with warm, rich blondes and chocolate browns becoming the statement colours du jour

2020 Hair Color Trends

For colour chameleons, switch your pastel shades for a neon hue – a small pop of colour will work well with athleisure wear.

The days of beachy waves with straightened ends are over. Instead, say hello to bouncy glossy curls. Roller sets with a gentle brush out and a good shine spray are must-haves to pay homage to 70s to 90s glam. For those who can’t bear kissing goodbye to boho, the long Shag is THE haircut of 2020. Featuring curtain bangs, tons of face-framing layers and long razored ends, the long shag is a great way to look effortless while still maintaining an urban bad-girl edge. This cut works best with your natural texture, so you can forgo the blow-dry.

Bobs, lobs, and every variation on the chic little French cut were the rage but it’s time to grow your mane out again and take inspiration from our two favourite Jennifers – Aniston and Lopez – who like their signature hairstyles are experiencing somewhat of a career renaissance.

3 Step by Step On-Trend Party Hairstyles

With New Year’s Eve just around the corner, rather than solely focussing on your outfit for the biggest party of the year, why not up your hair game with a fresh party style?

For those who don’t have time to hit a salon, here are three terrific options that will ensure you have show-stopping hair!

  1. The Twisted Braid

STEP 1: Prep your hair by applying a volumising mousse to mid-lengths and ends. If you’re starting with wet hair, blow-dry until completely dry. Brush through.

STEP 2: Take the front side section of your hair and bring it around to the nape of your neck, twisting it slightly as you go. Secure in place with a bobby pin while you do the same on the other side. Remove the bobby pin and tie the twisted ends and the rest of your hair together into a low ponytail.

STEP 3: Bring the end of your pony up to the V section where your twists connect and create a little hole in the hair, behind the hair tie. Pull the whole pony through the hole and wind the hair around the newly created twist to cover up any visible bits of the hair band.

STEP 4: Fold your ponytail up toward the V section again, but this time, tuck about the last inch or two of your hair into the twists. The longer your hair, the more you may need to tuck in, or else you’ll be left with a very large bun.

STEP 5: Continue tucking in the hair until it forms a nice, neat bun, then coming from an upward angle, push bobby pins into where you’ve just tucked in the hair, and secure as neatly and out of sight as possible. Spritz with some shine-enhancing hair spray to keep your look in place.

  1. The Bubble Ponytail “Braided” Updo

Incredibly easy and a nod to the athleisure trend that has dominated fashion for the past few seasons, the bubble ponytail just requires at least shoulder-length hair and a lot of elastics.

STEP 1: Gather some hair into a ponytail at the centre of the head and continue gathering all the way down – like a French braid but ponytails.

STEP 2: After securing each section, tug up and out on it to tighten and form the “bubbles.”

  1. Add an accessory

If your time is really short, then why not opt for an accessory. Hairbands, hair jewels, and ribbons have been everywhere this season. If you are a hair accessory virgin, a plain black velvet ribbon is a failsafe go-to chic addition for those who want to add an essence of French Girl into their style. After putting your hair into a pony, tie a ribbon around the hair tie, and voilà, you’ve transformed a boring pony into a runway-ready look.

This is How to Stop your Hair Colour from Fading….

A.K.A How to take care of coloured hair

There are numerous reasons that your carefully salon-crafted hair colour can fade.  Thankfully there are some steps you can take to ensure your colour remains vibrant all year round, whatever the weather or your lifestyle throws at you!

It’s a good idea at the initial hair consultation to determine a haircare plan with your stylist. Figuring out how frequently you want to colour your hair, and planning your salon visits, is a good way to avoid hot roots. It’s best to refresh your roots when regrowth is around an inch long, to help ensure an even colour and to prevent something called “banding” – overlapping) new root colour down over old colour, as this can make your hair appear darker than colour solely applied to new hair growth, creating a “band” of a lighter colour at your roots – not a good look! A weekly masque is a must as healthy hair will hold onto colour better than dry, damaged hair. Work the product into clean, wet hair, paying extra attention to dry ends, and leave it on for eight to ten minutes; then rinse out. If your hair is very dry, then leave your chosen masque on for up to 20 minutes. Also, avoid any products that contain harsh laurel sulfates that can make the colour come out.

High temps open up the hair cuticle, sapping your colour —so take lukewarm showers and try to limit the use of heated tools – remember it’s difficult for hair colour to deposit evenly on fried, broken strands. Always use a thermal hair protecting product onto towel-dried hair before using any hot tools.

The current weather in the UAE demands time spent pool or beachside. The salt in seawater fades colourfast, while the chlorine in pool water can also discolour the hair, usually imparting a sickly green tinge. To avoid this and give your hair SPF, try using a protection product such as KeraStraight Sun Protect Spray.

Secrets of a Successful Spray Tan

Few things have the beautifying effect associated with the golden glow of a tan. But given the scary stats on sun exposure, a spray tan is a healthier and safer option. For those who have never ventured into a tanning salon, there are a few must-do rules to ensure you achieve a long-lasting tan with a beautiful fade.

First of all ensure you remove all makeup and any deodorant, which may act as a barrier to the fake tan formula. Before she starts, the therapist may ask you “how deep” you want to go. This is your chance to explain what result you want to achieve in terms of colour. It also helps for them to know the occasion your spray tan is for, i.e. if it’s a two-week holiday you may want to go a deeper shade so it lasts longer, or if it’s for a wedding the very next day, you may want to stay lighter so it will appear as natural as possible.

The therapist may ask you to stand a certain way, such as “left arm up, right arm forwards while you bend your knees” as this will ensure the spray tan will be as streak-free as possible, with the best coverage. When you’re dry you can get dressed, ideally in loose, dark clothing and nothing that may rub the tan off, such as tight jeans or shoes. You may smell a little bit like malty biscuits but the latest generation of spray tans are not anything as potent as those of the past. Apply perfume to your clothes, not your skin, if you want to disguise it. In general, you can shower after 6-8 hours, or less if you have a tan with an ‘express’ formula – and be aware that if you’re planning on washing it off the next morning you may not want to sleep on white bedsheets as they may be stained!

For the longest-lasting result and an even fade, be sure to apply moisturizer (use one recommended by the spray tanner) after your shower.

If you want to look more glamorous, as well as thinner and healthier, why not book this in-salon pick-me-up, particularly with party season just around the corner!

As the weather starts to lose some of its warmth and the festive season approaches, it’s only natural you want to embrace the season – and what better way (especially when you live in a desert climate where jumpers are a rare possibility!) than to update your manicure to show off richer, more Autumnal hues. Pioneered at Giorgio Armani’s AW2019 show, these darker hues suit all skin types.

Here’s the 5 tips you need to UP your makeup game!

Perhaps it’s that you’re sick of following the same old makeup routine you have followed since you were a teenager, or maybe Kylie Jenner’s Instagram selfies are inspiring you to re-vamp your entire look, but before you clean out your cosmetic closet, here are five simple tips that will step up your makeup game:

1. Line those lips: Don’t be scared of lip liner. In fact, if done right, liner can make your lips appear fuller and more defined while giving longevity to your lipstick and preventing it from bleeding. The trick is to use a natural colour liner on the lips to make them appear their biggest.

2. Big up your brows: Groomed brows are quite a key trend so invent in a brow product and use a dedicated brush (called a spoolie) to disperse eyebrow colour and keep stray hairs in check.

3. Get the right tools: The tools of the trade are what will really step up your makeup game. Forget about using your fingers and the occasional Q-tip. If you want your makeup to look professional, essentials include a lip brush, a flat eyebrow brush, a precision angle brush, a blush brush, a small blending brush, a concealer brush, a foundation brush and a powder brush.

4. Use complimentary colours on your eyes: Your eyes are the focal point of your face, and making them stand out can change your whole look. When it comes to eye shadow, using colours that are opposite of your eye colour will actually make them stand out more.

Blue eyes: Anything with orange will make your blue eyes pop. Peach, gold, apricot and anything with an orange undertone is best.

Brown eyes: Almost any colour will work well with brown, but purple and blue make them stand out the most.

Green eyes: Colours with red undertones will make green eyes pop. Try shades that have some wine or plum colouring to them.

5. Take a makeup class: YouTube may be full of makeup tutorials that you can watch for free, but if you want to really what works best for your unique face, taking a makeup class could really be worth the time and money.

5 Health Reasons Why You Need Regular Pedicures

It might seem like an indulgence but did you know that pedicures are not only important to make your feet worthy of beautiful sandals, they are also important for the health of your feet and your overall well being!

During a pedicure, your feet will be moisturised, and while this is relaxing it also prevents cracks from developing and causing infections. Pedicures also clean dirt and bacteria from your feet to prevent fungi from growing. The nail technician will also be able to detect early signs of corns, bunions and fungal infections, conditions that are easier to treat when they are identified in their early stages. Professionally cleaning and cutting your nails will also help prevent ingrown toenails and infections.  It is also important to keep your cuticles moisturized to prevent nails from growing out with ridges or split ends which can cause the nails to lift out of the nail beds.

Calluses form because an area on your foot is being rubbed. This is the body’s way of protecting that area, but if it continues long-term, the skin can break down and can form a painful ulcer or sore. Pedicures provide the extra moisture to help prevent calluses from forming, and they also remove calluses before they cause issues. In the same way, exfoliating the dead skin on your feet will prevent it from accumulating and causing bunions or corns which can also be painful. The removal of the dead skin on your feet, especially on the heel, promotes new cell growth, which creates smoother and more attractive feet.

Another huge benefit of a pedicure is that it promotes circulation. The warm water and massage distribute heat around the area, encouraging better circulation. What’s more, massaging your feet promotes movement of the joints which reduces stiffness. This can help to relieve any stress your joints were experiencing and reduce its associated pain.

Finally, as you juggle the pressures of your career and life, a good pedicure can be very relaxing. It helps you relieve stress and can be therapeutic, which promotes well-being and overall healthier life.

How To Know What Blonde You Are

A glance on Instagram or the red carpet will show that there are a variety of blonde shades – platinum, honey, balayage, but finding the perfect one for you can be a difficult task.

Understanding colour science is key when working out the colour that will flatter you best. Start by determining whether your skin has cool or warm undertones. ‘Cool’ is defined by pink, red or blush undertones, whereas ‘warm’ is defined by yellow, peachy, golden undertones. You may be a combination of both, what colourists call neutral toned, which you will discover is a huge advantage!

The fundamental rule when choosing your blonde shade is to pick a tone that is opposite to your own skin tone. For cool undertones ashy, creamy or white hues look best; whilst for warm undertones honey, caramel or butterscotch shades will look fabulous.

If you have neutral skin then you’re really lucky as most shades will look great on you. One of the amazing things about going blonde is that it suits a variety of eye colours.

A soft balayage or baby lights will give you the most natural looking blonde and this can be achieved by using a combination of multidimensional hues incorporating warm, cool and creamy blondes with your base colour.

The only time blonde should be avoided is if the hair is extremely damaged. But if you have your heart set on being a blonde bombshell then a plan can be created featuring treatments such as Olaplex, which rebuilds the hair from the inside out. It just might take a little longer than you expected.

Going from black to blonde is possible but only over a number of sessions with your hair gradually becoming lighter in colour. Contrary to what you are implied on celebrity Instagram profiles, such a drastic change will not happen in just one simple salon visit! The main thing you need to expect is that after each session you will only be only a few shades lighter than you were initially at the start of that session. You will inevitably go through the orange / yellow stage. If a salon promises they can take you lighter without mentioning either of the above then I suggest you look at other salons – any stylist who fails to mention these factors either isn’t being truthful with you or he/she does not fully understand the process and what it entails. Remember your hair is your crown you never take off, so your hair needs to be in the best possible hands!

Combination Skin – What You Need to Know

Combination skin means you will be experience dryness and/or dehydration in some areas and oiliness in others. Usually the nose, forehead and chin (commonly called the t-zone) will be oily, while cheeks will be dehydrated.  Nearly all skin-types experience dehydration, which is a lack of moisture; while dry skin is due to a lack of oil. With combination skin some parts can be dull tight and flaky, while other parts can be greasy and can experience an occasional break out.

In general, combination skin is down to your genetic makeup, rather than lifestyle choices. That said, UV light from the sun and other factors such as stress, climate (air pollution), lifestyle, changes, diet and hormones can all contribute to the health and well-being of your skin. Humidity and dust can make your skin break out more than normal and contribute to clogged pores whiteheads and blackheads. Polluted air can cause ageing, and AC can be very dehydrating for the skin. In Dubai, it is quite common to experience the symptoms of combination skin such as clogged pores.

To ensure your skin looks its best, you need to have a good combination skin skincare routine featuring ingredients that can help to remove the dirt and oil from the skin such as tea tree oil, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, clay and charcoal can all help. In terms of best facial for combination skin, Vitamin C facials are great for brightening. Facials with enzymes and acids are super for exfoliation and removing dirt and oil and can show a quick result. For best results, though a combination of a good monthly facial and a daily home-care routine is a must for the best result.

One of my favourite treatments for combination skin is the Nimue Deep Cleanse facial treatment as it features clay masques and steps using cleansers that contain all the good acids and enzymes you need to have clean pores and a bright complexion.

Whenever you are purchasing skincare make sure the product has some beneficial ingredients that actually do something for your skin. Always use proven ingredients that work, and typically these are not found in over-the-counter products. For cleansers and masks go for products that are based on charcoal, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid and citric acid, tea tree or clay. The best moisturizer for combination skin should be filled with anti-oxidants and skin-loving acids. An important ingredient you might want to consider is Vitamin C – this is a great anti-oxidant and skin brightening ingredient. It can also act on marks left after spots and breakouts. Also, consider using products with Vitamin B (niacin-amide) as it is an amazing ingredient to even out the colour of skin. Last but not least is Hyaluronic acid. This is an amazing moisturizing ingredient that is in many serums and creams.

What is a Callus Peel and Why You Might Need One?

If you’ve found yourself investing a little too heavily in the trainer trend and avoiding sandals, mules and sling-back shoes because of the hard skin on the soles of your feet, then it’s definitely time to try a callus peel! This treatment is a simple and pain-free way of getting rid of dry skin often found on your feet and will definitely make you want to show off your feet, in all their glory.

Calluses form when your skin becomes dry and dehydrated and while moisturising regularly can help, sometimes you need a stronger intervention – enter the Callus Peel. This revitalising foot treatment is ideal for people whose feet need a little bit of extra TLC. It removes hard, callused skin and adds moisture in just 20 minutes.  The treatment starts with the application of a skin softener is applied to the areas which are affected the most from hard skin. Next, the feet are wrapped to enhance the effects of the softener. After a few minutes, the wrapping is removed, exposing the newly softened skin. This is then scraped away gently in a pain-free procedure. Once all the hard skin and calluses are removed, the skin is polished with a foot file. Finally, a moisturising treatment is applied to keep your feet feeling (and looking) amazing for as long as possible.

So if the thought of getting your feet out leaves you in a slight state of panic, a Callus Peel will work wonders for your confidence. After all, life’s too short to be worrying about your feet…

Everything You Need to Know About Essie Gel Manicure & Pedicure

There’s nothing quite like splurging on a luxurious manicure. An on-trend hue teamed with a touch of nail art or glitter can give you the same boost of confidence as a really good blowdry. Unlike that, which only lasts a day or so, a professional gel polish can last you several weeks. In fact, stacked up against a regular manicure, gels not only last longer, but they also feel stronger, and cast a mirror shine that quite simply is virtually impossible if you have regular polish. So what should you know before upscaling your mani and pedi with gel?

Gel and acrylic are not the same

Acrylic nails are made with a powder dipped in solvent and can add length to short nails. Sometimes acrylic nails come in colours, but usually they’re clear or natural-toned. Gel polishes can only colour your existing nails but are more durable than regular polish as the gel is hardened by curing under a UV or LED lamp.

Gel Nail Polish

Essie Gel Manicure

Gel nails are not harmful and will not damage the nails

Nails do not need to breathe and so having a gel polish will not harm the nail’s health. But your nail beds and cuticles are made of living tissue, which is why you need to be careful during the application and removal process and why you should leave the entire gel process to a qualified nail technician rather than option for a DIY job.

Keep your nail beds hydrated

To ensure your manicure is long-lasting and your nails look as healthy as possible, use a cuticle oil and moisturizer. This will not only protect the skin around your nails, but your actual nail beds, too.

So what happens during a gel mani appointment and how is it different to a regular mani? As with a run-of-the-mill mani, a gel manicure starts with cutting the nails, filing them to the desired length before lightly soaking the hands and trimming the cuticles. The polish itself is the point of difference: You’ll start with a base coat layer that primes your nails for the gel coat, which is a special kind of polish that gets firmed up under a UV light. After each coat is painted on, you place your hand under a UV light for 30 seconds. A glossy top coat goes on top, take one final minute under the lamp, and you’re done.  Hello to chip-free nails that you will just love showing off!

Hair-raising trends for AW 2019

If you’re feeling the need to change your hair with the new season, then why not take your inspiration from the runways of New York, London, Milan, and Paris, where an abundance of new trends – from the elaborate to the restrained- emerged, both in terms of colour and styling.

Colour your hair beautiful

Attributed to Lady Gaga’s character in “A Star is born”, red hair is enjoying a moment. Catwalks were awash with both natural red and deeper dyed red hair. In terms of blondes, it’s all about channelling the grungy look of platinum blonde with dark roots – use Courtney Love as your idol.

On the opposite end of the colour scale was Bronde, sitting somewhere between blonde and brown. It’s one of the more reserved 2019 hair colours and is easy to achieve.

Upstyle your pony

Ponies fall into two distinct categories this season – the playful Ariana Grande-style high ponytail or the elegance of a sleek low-hanging ponytail, perfect for showing off barettes and other on-point accessories.

Love your curls

Curls were a huge focal point for designers and fell into two camps: The sassy 70s full, voluminous curls that paid homage to Studio 54 with a centre parting or the retro romantic curls, which when teamed with a side parting had a timeless yet modern vibe.

Controversial crimping

Given the prevalence of braids the past few seasons, it’s hardly a surprise that crimped hair has experienced resurgence. This quick-to-come-quick-to-go technique shapes hair adds a lot of texture and volume to the hair and is best worn with tons of party-loving attitude.

Laila’s lash commandments

Our resident eyelash and brow guru, Laila is constantly asked by the region’s most influential beauty editors to share the secrets of achieving the best and most beautiful eyelashes possible so here are her top tips …

Never use super-long super thick extensions as they will damage your natural lashes. I recommend the 0.10 for every day because they are the closest weight to the natural lash, and in most cases it has helped the clients natural lashes to grow, not only because they are lighter but also there is no applying and removing of mascara which is one causes of eyelash damage. Lashes come in four different weights 0.25, 0.20, 0.15 and 0.10. They are all synthetic and hand cut. Most of the brands do not carry the 0.10 lashes which is my favourite weight to use.

Once applied, leave them alone! Do not use oil based eye make-up removers, do not brush them! Do blow dry them for a few seconds after getting them wet. This sets the adhesive and fluffs the lashes. A good set of lash extensions should last for two-three weeks, depending on the cycle of your lash growth, sometimes longer. Basically if you are using fine, professionally-applied lashes then you can keep them as long as you want to.

Strip lashes are safe to use but they do not look as natural as salon-applied fine lashes. DIY lashes are great if you just want to wear lashes as a one-off, such as for a night out.

Lash serum is a must if you are not naturally blessed with long thick lashes. A lash serum such as Lilash will be your secret best friend.

Avoid lash curlers as they are very damaging to the natural lashes. I personally wouldn’t recommend them to anyone. Instead I would say have LVL treatment – it curves your natural lashes for up to 8 weeks and there is no damage to the lash.

Waterproof mascara is a big no for me – I have seen many clients pull out their eyelashes trying to remove it.

Maintain eyelashes by using Lilash eyelash serum and almond oil.

Be gentle when removing eye makeup. Remove the makeup in two ways – up and down – and never criss cross the lashes.

How to help your skin cope when flying…

With Eid nearly here, many people will be catching flights this weekend, and while globetrotting can be of benefit to our work life and personal experiences, it can often have a detrimental effect on our skin.

Pressurised cabins have low levels of humidity and are very dry places to be for any length of time, making any natural moisture in your skin quickly evaporate. This means that your face, hands and other extremities will start to feel dry and look dull and parched.

What’s more, we all know that travelling can be a stressful time as there are many things to think about and flight times to meet. Stress produces the hormone cortisol, which impacts skin’s ability to function as a barrier and contributes to redness, blotchiness and breakouts. All in all, not a good recipe for perfect skin!

The good news is that it is possible to counteract these negatives effects of air travel with a bit of forward planning. First of all, always go make-up free. As scary as it sounds, flying barefaced will go a long way to ensuring that your skin remains hydrated and can breathe throughout the flight. Also, apply a luxurious moisturiser – Nimue offers terrific options that contain all the essential nutrients your skin needs to keep it hydrated for hours on end.

But the work doesn’t stop when the flight is over! Before arriving at your destination, re-apply your makeup or simply slather on a high factor SPF with UVA and UVB protection for daytime. (A favourite of Harper’s Bazaar Arabia is Nimue’s option!) As you disembark, wear a hat and sunglasses for maximum skin protection. If you have travelled to a hot climate it is a good idea to apply a gorgeous hydrating mask in the evenings, which will replenish any moisture lost during the daytime. Also consider adding a lightweight serum to your skincare regime. Eminence Organic’s Citrus C and Kale serum is rumoured to be a favourite with celebrities such as Meghan Markle and Jessica Biel.

Frequent flying doesn’t need to mean dry or prematurely aged skin. Follow our tips and you will be amazed at how good your skin feels, even after a long haul flight!

Three Products Every Girl Needs for The Dubai Summer!

Julian, Stylist at Pastels Salon Ritz Carlton gives us the lowdown on what you should be using to keep your hair at its healthiest whatever the climate!

For many living here hair can feel dry and fine due to three factors which are quite specific to the UAE, namely the desalinated water, the air conditioning which saps the moisture out of the hair, and  the lack of seasons in the UAE – there is a constant stress on the hair due to excessive and prolonged  sun exposure, which dries the hair out. Hardly surprising then that people turn to hair care products to replace this lost moisture, and there are many on the market.

Kerastase Elixir’s Oil

When it comes to natural oils, Kerastase Elixir’s oil offers brilliant results. It also offers heat defence, locks in moisture and offers a terrific shine. You can use it as a serum or add it into your conditioner to intensify that product’s effect and you can use it overnight as a deep conditioning treatment. It can also be used as a blowdrying primer that cuts down blowdrying time, without compromising the effects of a blowdry.

Kerastase Moisture Mask

There are many treatments that you can have in a salon to keep – or put back – moisture in the hair. One such example is KeraStraight Intense Boost, which utilises KeraStraight’s latest groundbreaking Moisture Masks to repair, re-hydrate and renew hair from the inside out. Intense Boost rebuilds what the hair lacks and locks in moisture and strength for up to 30 days to leave you with head-turning, luscious hair. This is a great treatment to have pre-summer and there is a range of take-home products to keep its efficacy.

Kerastase Fusio Dose

One of the best-sellers in terms of treatments is Kerastase Fusio Dose, a range of intermixable shots that can be combined to create a bespoke treatment cocktail perfect for your hair. One thing you should remember is that there is a misconception that if the hair is damaged, it lacks moisture but often the case is that if it is broken; by adding moisture you just smooth over broken hair, whereas, in reality, you should fix the hair with protein products before expecting treatments to enhance the condition of your hair.

In the Middle East, the style icons tend to be based around women with long, voluptuous, healthy-looking hair.  So when it comes to cutting techniques, we want to create thick-looking hair.  This means layers should be kept long as the longer the layers are; the more hair collects to the exterior shape of the haircut, ensuring hair looks thicker and longer. But to have styles like this, hair needs to be in optimum condition, healthy and shiny so you should always use professionally-recommended products that will either repair broken hair or lock in moisture, depending on your needs.

Meet the treatment the region’s beauty editors swear by for sleeker, smoother hair…

Let’s face it, if a beauty editor gives a treatment her seal of approval it’s highly likely the treatment does boast terrific results; however, it could also be the case that while the treatment might have suited her, it might not yield the same impressive results for you. But, when multiple beauty editors – especially in a place as multi-cultural as Dubai – clamour to endorse a treatment, it’s a sure thing that the treatment will achieve iconic status and become a must-have. This is exactly what’s happened with the much-hyped KeraStraight treatment.

Kerastraight

While many permanent straightening or smoothing treatments rely on harsh chemicals such as formaldehyde, KeraStraight’s innovative KS Complex does not. The treatment’s advanced protein technology is a game changer in the hair care industry. It encourages the re-building of keratin, which in turn repairs and strengthens the hair shaft, adding elasticity and moisture and protecting against environmental effects such as UV rays, smog, dust and smoke.

Curled Hair

According to Vogue Arabia, the results included “Swingy, smooth strands that instantly appeared healthier” and two weeks later, the curl-haired editor was still delighted admitting “my hair still boasts its curl but is significantly more manageable, cutting my morning mirror time in half.”
The digital editor of Emirates Woman was just as wowed, saying “If you spend half your life fighting with your hair, this is the treatment for you – it not only vastly reduces styling time, but the effects last for up to four months. “

So while humidity, air conditioning and the water in the UAE can all wreak havoc on hair, leaving it dry, dehydrated and frizzy, this will be your haircare saviour as the treatment promises to eradicate that hated frizz, repairing the hair and leaving it shiny, healthy and far easier to style.

Need help to Face the Summer Holidays with Confidence?

The summer is almost here and for many, it means a visit back home to see friends and family. Of course, it’s natural that on these visits you will want to look the best possible version of yourself and enjoy endless compliments!
While make-up can, admittedly, camouflage certain skin imperfections, wouldn’t it be much better if you had glowing, youthful skin as your make-up canvas, rather than relying on the touch of a hefty concealer?
We have three fabulous facials that promise to give you skin that is so perfect you will want to be taking selfies all summer long!
For a Goddess-like glow…
We recommend the Nimue Active Glow. This rejuvenating and stimulating treatment is perfect for dull, tired skins who need some TLC. Alpha hydroxyl acid, Vitamin C and alpha lipoic acid give the skin a “wake up call” to ensure it looks so refreshed that you will appear as if you have been on one long holiday, even if in reality you can’t remember the last day off you had!

For tighter, more toned skin…
The Guinot Hydradermie Lift is one of those rare treatments that enjoys a cult-like status amongst beauty editors for its unrivalled results. This 75-minute treatment is a well-recognised alternative to a more invasive aesthetic therapy. In essence, it lifts and rejuvenates the skin and re-contours the shape of the face. Prior to stimulating the muscles, lymphatic drainage takes place, which aids in the removal of toxins from the muscle to brighten the skin. The patented Guinot hand-help device plumps up the small muscles of the face that flattens with age, for a younger looking skin – it’s like a workout for the face!

For eco-beauty lovers who still want results…
The Eight Greens Facial by Eminence Organics Skincare is a deceptively simple sounding facial. In reality, this deluxe 90-minute facial, loved by the likes of Jessica Alba and Meghan Markle, is a supercharged experience. The core of the facial comes with the double whammy an Arctic Berry Enzyme Peel and the Eight Greens Phyto Mask made with plants and seeds that are rich in phytoestrogens and antioxidants to stimulate hydration and elasticity. Immediately after it, you will have a radiant and youthful-looking complexion that is guaranteed to get people talking!

Beach HairStyle to Rock this Summer

Laid-back easy glamour, beach waves are now as visible on the Red Carpet as they are beach-side but how do you achieve them?

Jordan Robertson, Senior Stylist at Pastels Salon Ritz Carlton gives us the low-down on a trend that shows no signs of abating!

L'Oréal Professionnel Tecni ART Full Volume Extra Mousse
L'Oréal Professionnel Tecni ART PLI

To achieve tight beach waves, start by spraying some L’Oreal Tecni Art Pli only through the hair and smooth out the hairline, ensuring you don’t smooth the ends out as you want to keep the hair’s natural texture. Then, split the hair into small half- inch sections and starting from the back using a one-inch tong wrap the hair around the tong and hold for 20 seconds. Make sure you don’t twist the hair as you wrap it and when removing the tongs, avoid touching the hair. Tong the last sections on the hairline away from the face. Once the hair has all cooled down apply a good amount of L’Oreal Beach Waves and scrunch into the hair as well as the roots.

L'Oréal Beach Waves

For smoother, looser beach waves, apply L’Oreal Tecni Art Pli from the roots to the ends and blow dry smooth with little root lift. Working from the back, take one-inch sections and use a large tong to curl. This time, when wrapping the sections around the tong apply a little twist as you go.
When coming to the hairline make sure the sections are away from the face again – this gives a natural look.
Once the hair is cooled brush out with a wide tooth comb – never use a brush or a small comb for this, it needs to be a wide tooth comb.  Next, apply a little amount of L’Oreal Beach Waves. Try putting in a side parting and tuck one side behind the ear for an on-point look.

Mario Badescu Aloe & Cucumber Spray

To keep hair looking good at the beach, I would recommend ensuring you have these five hero products always in your beach bag – L’Oreal Beach Waves, L’Oreal PLI, a Tangle Teezer, L’Oreal full volume mousse and Mario Badescu Aloe and Cucumber spray. The last one is technically a facial spray but trust me your hair needs some moisture too, especially after a day of sand and sea exposure! So to rejuvenate your hair, spritz a little onto it and watch it transform into hydrated healthy and fabulous, perfectly ready to go from the beach to the bar.

Time to hit the beach!

As fun and relaxing as a day at the beach can be, aside from sunscreen to protect your skin, be sure to pack some haircare must-haves to keep your hair protected too. As your favourite haircare destination, Pastels Salon has got the ultimate beach bag wish-list, which will ensure channelling your inner beach babe won’t lead to any hair disasters!

How to ensure you glow this Valentine’s Day!

With the most romantic day of the year almost upon us, Beautician Aislinn from Pastels Jumeirah shares her tips on how you can look your most alluring!

“When it comes to our skin, we all want to have it bright, glowing and radiant, but how to we get this?

Aside from using products with active ingredients such as Vitamin C for brightening and AHA or Glycolic for exfoliating, don’t forget  your lifestyle, stress levels, sleep patterns and diet all have a big impact on the glow and purity of your skin. A healthy day moisturizer and a good night creme will seriously hydrate and restore dehydrated skin and a weekly masque suited to your skin type is also highly recommended.

Dull skin is usually due to the fact that we have dead skin cells layered on top, and they need to be removed by exfoliating with an AHA or a light soft scrub. The rice powder strawberry rhubarb dermafoliant from Eminence or the green tea gommage biologique from Guinot are brilliant exfoliators. Be careful in your choice of exfoliator because bigger micro beads in some scrubs can give little tears in thin sensitive delicate skin so always ask your skincare specialist to recommend the best one for you!

Another reason for dull skin is poor circulation and so to improve blood circulation our collagen boost massage facial is a terrific option!

Dry skin is usually due to damage, and not always a lack of moisture. The main damage is done by the sun and that is why it is so important to wear an SPF 365 days a year.  It is also important to avoid certain products such as those containing alcohol as well as saunas and steam rooms if you have dry skin as they will make it worse!

Finally, to really give dry skin radiance, nothing beats a facial oil!”
