The Magic of a Well-Chosen Moisturiser

Smooth, flawless skin

Pastels Salon Jumeirah’s resident beautician, Edwige shares some insight into the importance of a good moisturiser….

If you think the moisturizer you use does not affect how your makeup looks and how long it will last, then you need to think again. A good base layer is crucial for flawless makeup. In addition to helping your foundation, CC cream, or concealer to go on smoothly, the formula you choose can tone down redness, help balance your complexion, and make your skin glow. In fact, face moisturizer is the linchpin of your skincare routine. A moisturizer can improve radiance by enhancing light reflection off your skin, diminish fine lines by plumping, increase hydration by pulling in water, and protect from the environment by forming a breathable seal over the skin.

Choosing a targeted formula for your skin’s needs also means it is easier to achieve any makeup look. Always prep skin with a moisturizer that is right for your skin type because if you do not, you’ll just put more makeup on top, when you could solve the problem by having a good skincare routine.

Moisturizer for Dry Skin

If you have dry skin, then using a rich cream can help you achieve that dewy skin you need. You can layer all the tinted moisturizer or creamy highlighter you want, but if your skin is dry, flakes and fine lines are going to steal the show. So, it is vital to prep your skin with a stellar face cream that contains hydrating ingredients.  It is also vital to take the time to fully massage in a moisturiser. Without prepping the skin properly, the makeup will not sit uniformly across the face. The areas that are dry and flaky will just get encrusted into the makeup and you will see all of that sitting on the surface.

Moisturizer for Oily Skin

For those with oily skin, a lighter texture is better. Moisturisers that contain high levels of humectant ingredients such as hyaluronic acid bind to—and pull in—water to hydrate skin and if your skin is hydrated, it will not create excess oil to compensate for its lack of water. The result: Your skin is naturally less greasy in oily zones.

Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin

If you are sensitive, then try a fragrance-free formula to achieve an even complexion. While a fragrance adds to the sensorial experience of using a product, these compounds can trigger irritation for those who have sensitive skin. That does not mean you should avoid all skincare products, rather choose a hydrating moisturizer with no added fragrances to keep your skin calm. The outer skin layer serves as a barrier between your skin and the outside world and when it is disrupted, which is often the case with sensitized skin, it loses hydration, leading to dryness, inflammation, and redness, so you must choose your moisturiser wisely to avoid this happening.
